Cultural Colonialism and my Love

Continuing from the previous note I sought of gave a historical analysis on something has been dear to me which is football. I titled the note Cultural Colonialism and my Love because it is never easy to cast a critical eye on the things you are attached to. We all share this common fear of disrupting our cognitive resonance that would cause us to re-examine the way we see the world. In other words by critically thinking about our habits we how down right absurd we can be in our actions and thoughts. For me I feared that by lifting the veil of this sport I’ll begin to see how much a colonial subject I was or still is today. That my fanonian gaze towards Europe says more about me than the subject I am discussing. Nevertheless, I think I fall in good company of people who are reptilian in their process of decolonization as they shed layer after layer of colonial thinking. The current tournament taking place in Ukraine and Poland has generated a discussion because as some people have pointed out that this is the best tournament next to the world cup. Therefore it is only natural to want to see this tournament. However last time I checked I was certain the African Cup of Nations participants for the most part ply their trade in the ‘best’ leagues as well as for the Copa America participants. It has truly become laughable to hear this cliché that football is a unifying sport. If we take into consideration the Prolific Mercurial Danish Striker Nicholas Bendtner, truly a Point Fortin minor league dream was fined nearly 100,000 pounds for displaying an add for a betting company along the waist line. Those who have followed recent events at this tournament would see the dotishness (trini slang for stupid) in this. Bendtner apparently did not get the memo when it came to celebrating because footballers advertise with an undershirt and not their blasted underwear!!!!!!

But seriously Bendtner’s fine was laughable in the light of the Russian and Ukrainian FA taking a 10,000 pound fine for racially abusing players. Now what’s even more Laughable is that people are in uproar for UEFA’s inaction….. Really? That would mean that Europe isn’t a decadent culture riddled with far right nationalist sentiments, that UEFA is in fact appealing to a misguided belief that European Nations are actually liberal…..

Ha! Take that Merkell!!!!!!!!! See I knew some down the line you were a Closet freak….umm I mean Liberal just waiting (preferably when Germany lifts a title) to say Multiculturalism works if you can be like Mesut Ozil!!!!.
